Audio and Video recording devices have come a long way in the past few years.

A really good audio recorder was difficult to find, and there were only a few good ones out there even just five years ago.

Luckily technology is zooming ahead in all markets! You can now find many audio and video recording devices, and many are conveniently on Amazon, where many people are shopping online every day and you can see lots of reviews and a star rating.

There are many to choose from, and many sellers out there.

Here are the things I look for and my most up to date recommendations:

Audio Devices

One thing to note – some of the less expensive audio devices are actually *monitoring* devices. This means you can listen in but there is nothing that is recorded (unless you do it manually on your listening end somehow.) Watch out for the unless that is what you are looking for. The majority of people I talk to want that recording so they don’t have to listen at the “right” moment, and so they have the hardcore proof they may need for a divorce or to call their spouse out on it after it happens.

What to look for in an audio recorder:

Look at battery life: See how long the battery lasts and if that is the recording time or the whole time it is out there just sitting too including when a recording is happening. The good ones can last days.

Look at recording/storage amount: There is a wide range of storage amounts available out there, from a couple of hours to a few days’ worth. If you have to leave the device somewhere you know it will record a lot of background noise or useless dialog before it has a chance to record a cheating event you will need a lot of recording time. If it will be quiet the majority of the time, like in a bedroom, you can opt for less storage time if you want.

Here are some that I recommend, and my favorite is the ATTO Audio Recorder. It’s easy to program, easy to retrieve the audio after you’re done, and very small and doesn’t look like anything if someone happened to pick it up, just a black square. There’s even a stealth mode where even if it is picked up it won’t display any numbers or controls or anything. (Most accurate prices are shown after clicking below.)
